A series of pride in the alpine skiing circus came to an end last night. For the first time since Flachau 2017, or almost four years (Frida Hansdotter / Swe), a woman landed on the top floor in a World Cup slalom, which is not Mikaela Shiffrin or Petra Vlhova. Michelle Gisin was the big winner in the enlightened goal race at Semmering, the Swiss woman impressed with a great performance on the way to her first career success. “I am incredibly happy and proud, a perfect day,” delighted the 27-year-old, who won the first Swiss women’s slalom since 2002.
Gisin avoided a home win for ÖSV by eleven hundredths. Katharina Liensberger, who achieved the best result of her career, came in second. “It feels like a victory. I drove with all my heart, right now I can drive to the limit,” said the Vorarlberg native, who became friends with Semmering at a young age. “I scored the points here for the first time four years ago. Home races are always fun, even without spectators,” said Liensberger, who beat none other than Shiffrin. The 25-year-old American was still in the lead after the first round, but then failed to achieve an ideal final.
“I am very happy for Michelle, but of course I would have liked to win,” said Shiffrin, who before the race had put a self-created friendship medal on an employee of the local OK team, track assistant Fritz Kremsl. The organizational show of force, which the storms had made necessary on Monday, not only won “Mika” respect. “We really appreciate what has been done for us here,” emphasized Shiffrin, who stayed ahead of his great rival Vlhova. The Slovak did not leave Semmering with the best memories. In the giant slalom that carried the wind, the halftime leader was left empty-handed, yesterday she lost the podium after five successes in suite slalom. Vlhova finished fourth.
The red-and-white-red team had a great performance as a group. In addition to Liensberger, Katharina Truppe (6th), Katharina Huber (10th) and Chiara Mair (12th) made the top twelve. The new year may come.
