The reorganization of constitutional protection follows reasonable approaches. The decisive factor, however, is how the reform is lived.
This decision is logical and there is no alternative: the turquoise green coalition has decided on a complete new beginning with the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism (BVT) will soon go down in history, a Directorate of the State Intelligence and Security Service (DSN) will be created with a new structure, new staff and new rules.
The old BVT stood out for its incompetence and political intrigue. There were high-ranking employees who misused the party’s intelligence work for political purposes, there was betrayal of secrets, employees who had shadowy part-time jobs, and there was a lot of intrigue. Part of the responsibility for this was the politicization of the secret service: ÖVP interior ministers in recent years have made good use of their influence in the agency.
