A memorable season of Formula 1 | Nachrichten.at

Max Verstappen ended the 2020 Formula 1 season with his victory yesterday in Abu Dhabi. The Red Bull driver celebrated a sovereign victory from start to finish against the Mercedes cars of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton in the desert emirate. The latter had already been confirmed as the new world champion for three races, however this season offered a lot of tension and was memorable:

The record hunter: Hamilton was the measure of all things and was crowned world champion for the seventh time with eleven victories in 17 races. The 35-year-old met Michael Schumacher. With 95 Grand Prix victories and 98 pole positions, the Briton has even surpassed the German. Hamilton always emphasized that he was just part of a great Mercedes team. As a symbol of this, yesterday the names of all the team’s employees could be read on the Mercedes chassis.

The race against Corona: Immediately before the season started in March in Australia, it was canceled after the Corona cases at McLaren. The protection concept designed by Formula 1 in a row was exemplary for many other sports and celebrated its premiere at Spielberg in July. Formula 1 also failed to overcome the virus, as several drivers missed races due to infections during the season.

Social commitment: In the course of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, Formula 1 accelerated this year for social equality. Led by Hamilton, the first black world champion in Formula 1 history, the drivers knelt to set an example before each race. Mercedes took this as an opportunity and then let the “Silver Arrows” spend the season in black paint.

The fortunate: The fact that Romain Grosjean came out of the fire and tearing two parts of Haas’ car almost unscathed at the Bahrain GP was a miracle. Given that the 34-year-old Frenchman still has no cockpit for 2021, it could still have been his last appearance in Formula 1.

The big loser: For Sebastian Vettel it was the bitterest season of his career, which was decorated with four World Cup titles. In their sixth year together, the “divorce” of Ferrari took place, and it was very ugly. Sporty too: ranked 13th in the World Championship, Vettel is Ferrari’s worst driver since 1981. Also, sixth place in the constructors’ championship means a minimum of 30 years for the proud “Scuderia”. After 14 victories with Ferrari, Vettel will join Aston Martin’s new factory team next year.
