Shortly after 8:30 pm, an innkeeper contacted the mountain rescue service and informed them that a guest registered overnight had not arrived at the refuge. A large-scale search was launched, in which the 57-year-old former Viennese’s car was found parked in a parking lot.
Then mountain rescuers and alpine police officers specifically searched for hiking trails and unmarked trails in the Groen Pyhrgas area. They found an entry for the man in the summit book. The flight police provided support with night vision equipment and thermal imaging cameras, and the search area could be narrowed by a location on the mobile phone. However, the helpers were unable to find the abandoned man so the search was interrupted around 2:30 a.m.
On Saturday around 7 am, emergency services continued their search. Shortly after 8 a.m., the flight police helicopter spotted the man on the rocky terrain at an altitude of about 1,770 meters. The properly equipped man traveling alone, sadly, could only be recovered dead.
