Given the corona virus crisis, it is currently unclear whether the season can really start in September as planned. Since the audience presentation has to be canceled, ORF III makes a virtue of necessity and broadcasts the game schedule presentation on Sunday night for the first time as a television event, more on that in the opening phase of the Roscic era.
Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini
Composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini form the basis for nightly events in a house like the Vienna State Opera with its 350 performances a year and its approximately 130 productions. “Madama Butterfly”, “El rato del serrallo”, “La Traviata”, “Carmen”, Parsifal “are some of the first nights that Roscic wants to offer a new basic program at home.
To get this amount, the new administration relies heavily on acquisitions from other companies, as well as co-productions for the upcoming season. According to the plan, the round is opened by “Butterfly”, played with great success in London and New York since 2005 by Anthony Minghella, who died in 2008, with soprano star Asmik Grigorian in the lead role, followed by the version Hans Neuenfels’ iconic “Stuttgart Kidnapping” Opera. (1998) and Dmitri Tcherniakov’s production of “Eugen Onegin” from Moscow.
Newly adapted for Vienna
Calixto Bieito’s “Carmen” has been shown on 29 stages worldwide since 1999, Barrie Kosky originally directed “Macbeth” for Zurich. Both directors will return with new works: Bieito will develop “Tristan und Isolde” on 21/22, Kosky will start a new Da Ponte trilogy with “Don Giovanni”. The productions now brought to Vienna do not make special appearances, they are adapted to local conditions, rehearsed and transferred to the repertoire. In the other seasons there will be more internal productions.
First major in-house production dedicated to Henze
The first new in-house production will be released on December 13 and will be dedicated to Hans Werner Henze. “The Sea Betrayed” is a premiere in the ring, directed by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito, directed by Simone Young, and Vera-Lotte Boecker, a newcomer to the solo ensemble, appears in the lead role. The second major in-house production is a new “Parsifal”: Under the musical direction of General Music Director Philippe Jordan, Jonas Kaufmann and Elina Garanca, who are making their world debut as Kundry, they will be directed by Kirill Serebrennikow, who is currently not allowed leave Russia.
“La Traviata” with Pretty Yende as Violetta is Simon Stone’s first job in the house as a co-production with the Paris Opera, his “Wozzeck” will follow next season. “Faust” directed by Frank Castorf is a co-production with the Stuttgart Opera, “L’incoronazione di Poppea” premiered in 2018 as a co-production directed by Jan Lauwers in Salzburg. In Vienna, the Concentus Musicus will play in the orchestra pit, thus continuing the tradition of baroque work that began with Dominique Meyer with guest orchestras.
The most notable re-recordings include “Elektra” in the production that has been replaced by Harry Kupfer and with the return of Franz Welser-Möst to the director’s desk, the original French version of “Don Carlos” with Ildar Abdrazakov and Jonas Kaufmann and ” Le Nozze “at the Also replaced the production of Jean-Pierre Ponnelle in the meantime. Otto Schenk’s “Rosenkavalier” is rehearsed musically.
Restart for ballet
The new direction also means a new beginning for the State Ballet and Volksoper, which with Martin Schläpfer now receives not only a new director, but also a chief choreographer. Consequently, many of Schläpfer’s creations are also on the seasonal schedule. In the big house it is presented with a world premiere: “4” for Gustav Mahler’s fourth symphony brings together all the dancers of the company in a single work.
But Schläpfer also sometimes maintains the three-part evenings beginning, for example in “Dances Pictures Symphonies”, where the works of Balanchine and Ratmansky meet alongside the premiere of their own creation for Shostakovich’s Fifth.
