Most starry skies allow a clear view of the Lyrids shooting stars in the coming nights. “You could see a shooting star every two minutes,” said Ulrich Köhler of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Especially on Thursday night, shooting star lovers could get their money’s worth.
The ZAMG predicts a clear and cool, but frost-free spring night for Vorarlberg. Perfect for looking up when shooting stars pass by.
Corona crisis guarantees better vision
“It’s not more public than any other year,” said DLR’s Köhler. The conditions for the sighting are particularly good. The night was darker due to the waning moon. “Currently we have very good visibility conditions, but also because there is very little flight and the air is very clean.”
The earth passes through the tail of a comet at this time. This was discovered in the solar system in 1861. “Every year on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, the earth crosses the rest of this comet’s tail,” says Köhler. This would cause dust particles to enter the earth’s atmosphere. As a result of the impact, the particles were burned and the shooting stars were visible.
The astronomer recommends observing high spots where the least scattered light from city lights makes it difficult to see shooting stars. Finding a place to see shooting stars in Vorarlberg is not difficult at all.
