Rent Arrears: Hundreds of Landlords Affected by Lawsuits

Perhaps the grave candles that 160 innkeepers and coffee makers from across Austria placed in their windows and displays on Monday aren’t just symbolic. Peter Dobcak, Chairman of the Owners of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, estimates that 25 to 30 percent of Vienna’s restaurants may not survive the Corona crisis.

And that could also have something to do with rental costs. Because, as Dobcak said Tuesday, several hundred homeowners are affected by lawsuits for outstanding rent payments. On Monday, as reported, Vienna’s most famous coffee grower, Berndt Querfeld, took to the media. He was sued for arrears in the rent of two of his coffee shops: Café Mozart on Albertinaplatz and Café Landtmann am Ring.

The missing payments were sued at Café Mozart, the Landtmann is even affected by an eviction lawsuit. Querfeld wanted to talk to the owners of the house, he explains in an interview with KURIER. But that was rejected in both cases, as was a mediation process.

According to gastro president Dobcak, Querfeld is not the only one having trouble paying rent for his businesses.
