The opposite was not to be expected due to the crown, it is now clear in black and white: the Viennese urban hotel industry recorded a drop in overnight stays of 73.9 percent in 2020, as Vienna Tourism announced in a broadcast on Tuesday. A total of 4.6 million overnight stays were recorded. For comparison: in the record year 2019 there were 17.6 million overnight stays.

Hotels have had to be closed for weeks since November due to the crown; currently there is an officially prohibited entry. Business travelers are excluded from this.

In December, actually a strong month for the industry, there was an almost total failure in the Viennese hotel industry: only 76,000 overnight stays were recorded, representing a year-on-year decrease of 95.6 percent.

The overnight net billing in the hotel industry for the months of January to November was 231.5 million euros. That means a decrease of 74.4 percent. Figures are not yet available for December.
