The Vienna Greens are on their way to new leadership. As announced, Birgit Hebein resigned as party leader on Monday. The party’s secretary of state, Peter Kristöfel, took office on an interim basis. Hebein’s successor should be chosen before the summer.

The party committees will discuss the exact procedure for the election – a regional assembly is planned no later than June – “and will provide information in due course,” the Vienna Green Party said in a broadcast. Kristöfel plans to provide information on the process of the program that Hebein has already started in the spring.

Hebein didn’t get a position in the town hall club

It had achieved the best result historically for the Vienna Greens in the Vienna elections in October, but the Ökos left the coalition with the SPÖ after ten years. The then Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Transport was no longer in charge of any function by the City Council. Hebein later resigned his seat on the council, but initially remained leader of the party.

On the occasion of the current withdrawal, Kristöfel thanked her for having “contributed to shaping the Vienna of the Greens for many years as a profound social expert and most recently as deputy mayor, councilor for Climate Change and party leader.” He came to know and appreciate her as a fighter against poverty and for a decent minimum income.
