It is a turbulent weekend. Labor Minister Christine Aschbacher had to resign on Saturday due to accusations of plagiarism.
His successor will be presented to the public at noon on Sunday. The chancellor’s choice reportedly fell on a scientific capacity: the director of the Institute for Advanced Study (IHS), Martin Kocher. The economist will take over the key department in a delicate phase: economic reconstruction is expected after the Crown crisis.
Born in 1973 in Salzburg, he is a graduate economist with a research focus on behavioral economics. Kocher has led the IHS since 2016 and has also been chairman of the Fiscal Council, a watchdog for the conduct of public finances, since 2020.
Kocher is known to many people through his analysis of economic policy in the media. The IHS also prepares the periodic economic forecasts together with the WIFO, on the basis of which the government prepares the budget.
