At the beginning of the week there was already a lot of snow in southern Austria. Meanwhile, it snows heavily again in parts of Carinthia and East Tyrol, with up to half a meter of fresh snow in some places. 35-55 cm of fresh snow is possible above 1300 meters. In Lienz, Kötschach or Dellach im Drautal there can be up to 40 cm of snow.

Chain service and road blocks in Carinthia

Klagenfurt. Heavy snowfall on Saturday, as happened a few weeks ago, caused massive roadblocks in Carinthia. Upper Carinthia in particular was affected: as announced by the Hermagor district authority in a broadcast, the B111 in Lesachtal, which had been isolated from the outside world for days this winter, was blocked. The lock is expected to remain in place until Sunday night.

The Plöckenpass road, which leads to Italy, was closed to traffic in the morning. Chains were mandatory on the B87 in the direction of Weißensee, on Nassfeldstrasse (B90), on the B110 via Gailberg and on Mallnitzer Strasse (B105). Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes require snow chains on Drautal Straße (B100).

Weather warning for the south and north

ZAMG has issued a weather advisory for parts of Carinthia and eastern Tyrol due to heavy snowfall. In parts of Lower Austria and Upper Austria, slippery roads are possible from Saturday night and into Sunday night. Beware of black ice!

Skiing instead of driving a car on the streets

In East Tyrol there is already so much fresh snow that the streets disappear under white. In Anras, a community of 1,200 people in East Tyrol, some residents creatively deal with snow masses. Without further ado, they turned the street into a ski slope. Ö3’s meteorologist Sigi Fink shared a video of the action on his Facebook page:
