At least one person died in heavy snowfall in parts of Japan. As Japanese television station NHK reported Thursday, the 70-year-old man was found dead under a heavy snow removal device the night before. Apparently, he fell into a river with the device while working. An extremely cold air front has caused massive snowfalls in many parts of the country. The government asked residents to stay home if possible.

In some cases, traffic was severely hampered and airlines had to cancel numerous flights. Meanwhile, local authorities warned of new snowfall.
