Atlético de Madrid, the best Spanish football club, has extended its lead in the championship race thanks to a labor victory and a mistake by the city’s rival, Real Madrid. With the 1-0 (1-0) victory over Getafe FC, the league leaders consolidated their first position against Real, which only reached 1: 1 (1-0) at Elche FC.
Atlético’s new signing, Luis Suárez, scored the winning goal with a header in minute 20. The rojiblancos have played two games less than the team around the national player Toni Kroos and they start the new year with a good position of departure.
The initially favored kings had taken the lead through Luka Modric (20th). In the second half, Fidel Chaves (52nd) tied with a penalty.
Valencia CF suffered another setback. The six-time champion lost to FC Granada 1: 2 (1: 1) and went winless in their eighth consecutive league game. Attention was focused on referee Adrián Cordero Vega, who distributed three expulsions in just six minutes: first Jason from Valencia with yellow-red (70o / repeated foul) and Gonçalo Guedes with red (73o / referee’s insult) had to leave the field, then also saw Rojo from Granada defender Domingos Duarte (76th / serious foul).
