The Russian prosecution has announced a new investigation against Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. He was accused of having privately used donations to public organizations controlled by him, he said Tuesday. He and other unidentified people would have spent 356 million rubles (about 3.9 million euros) in this way.
On Twitter, Navalny said the accusations were fabricated and appeared to be those indicated by President Vladimir Putin. The opposition politician is in Germany.
Navalny had collapsed on a domestic flight in August and was flown for treatment at the Charite in Berlin. According to the federal government, he was poisoned with a neurotoxin from the Novichok group, which developed during the Soviet era.
Navalny accuses Putin of being the mastermind behind the attack. The Moscow government has denied its involvement, calling the incident part of a US-backed plot to discredit Putin.
In recent days, pressure has increased on Navalny to return to his homeland. The Russian prison authorities had given the opposition party an ultimatum to fulfill the conditions of a previous suspended sentence and to inform the Russian authorities. Otherwise, there is a risk of imprisonment. (reu / dpa)
