Katharina Liensberger took her next slalom podium at Semmering Circuit on Tuesday. After two third places in Levi, the Vorarlberg woman is also third in the World Cup at home after the first round. The gap with leader Mikaela Shiffrin is 0.32 seconds to the decision (6.30 pm, live on ORF1). In second place is the Swiss Michelle Gisin (+0.02).
Besides Liensberger, Katharina Truppe from the ÖSV team also kept her chances on the podium. The 24-year-old Carinthian started the race with start number one and is 0.53 seconds behind the American in fourth place. The Austrians also showed good team performance. Franziska Gritsch finished seventh (1.36), Chiara Mair is tenth (1.65). Petra Gallhuber is twelfth (1.96).
For Petra Vlhova, however, the first round on the “Magic Mountain” did not go as planned. The Slovak, who won the last five slaloms, is sixth with an unexpectedly large gap of 0.89 seconds. If Shiffrin ends Vlhova’s winning streak, it would be his first slalom success in exactly one year. On January 29, 2019, the 25-year-old triumphed in Lienz.
Liensberger first “on the train”
As Shiffrin is about to win 44 slalom, Liensberger fights for his first World Cup success. With a brave but not flawless ride, the 23-year-old saved the opportunity. “He had a couple of whores inside. Only downstairs I got on the train. I want to take that with me for the second race. It was fun, ”Liensberger said in an interview with ORF.
For Truppe it would be the third podium of his career. Carinthian was already third in Levi (2019) and Kranjska Gora (2020). “It fits very well, I am happy to be in fourth place in the middle. I drove fine, only the final slope was too cautious. This has to be changed in the second round. Snow is aggressive. Here you have to drive with feeling, ”said Truppe.
Shiffrin satisfied with running one
Shiffrin demonstrated the best way to master the difficult initial slope. After a small mistake on the second goal, the American put on an impeccable performance and was 0.45 seconds ahead of Gisin in the second set. On the transition to the final slope, however, Shiffrin briefly lost the line and lost a large part of his lead.
Shiffrin is in the lead
Mikaela Shiffrin set the fastest time on the “Zauberberg” in the first slalom race. The American especially impressed at the top.
However, the winner of 67 World Cup races was satisfied with her journey. “It felt good. The slope and the course of the course were also very good. I skied actively”, was the intermediate result of Shiffrin, who has already won the slalom twice in Semmering (2016, 2018).
