The aim of the Austrian U20 team at the IIHF U20 World Championship in Canada is to improve from game to game. On Monday through Tuesday night, the Austrians definitely managed to do this against their favorite partner Sweden in the second competition at Edmonton’s Rogers Place.
Although the ÖEHV team lost 4-0 to the Scandinavians, a defensively stable performance and outstanding goalkeeper Sebastian Wraneschitz prevented more goals from being conceded. Sweden, like the United States, recorded a high number of shots on goal in their first game against Austria, with excellent saves from the Austrian goalkeeper almost every minute. At the end of this game there were nearly 60 saves on Wraneschitz’s account.
Sweden used an outnumbered game for the first two goals, the other goals coming after notable combinations. Tim Harnisch scored Austria’s first goal in a tournament after an off chance on the racket, his shot missed on the Swedish home. “Our goalkeeper endured incredibly and this result won us. After the first period we played calmer, so we found a couple of opportunities, ”captain Marco Rossi said.

Head coach Roger Bader added: “We made some changes to the way we played. We wanted to play more compactly in the middle zone. We wanted to expel the opponent. Sweden was very strong in the race, we knew that. We defended the slot better and more focused than in the first game. There were many shots again, but much more from outside. We want to progress every day and put all of this on ice. I am very satisfied with how the teams have improved in recent days. By our standards, we fought back and fought well. I’m proud of the team. “
The Austrians had to play this second World Cup match without defender Philipp Wimmer, who was suspended for two matches by the IIHF Disciplinary Panel following his misconduct penalty in the game against the United States. Wimmer summed up this penalty after a check against an opponent’s head and neck area and therefore still missing against Russia on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
