As his family announced, he died Tuesday morning at the age of 98 in a hospital in Neuilly west of Paris. The son of Italian immigrants was considered a pioneer of ready-to-wear fashion and a visionary designer. Cardin founded his own fashion house as early as 1950, and in the following decades built a global corporate empire. This also included several elegant restaurants. He received numerous honors, such as acceptance into the French Legion of Honor.
Born in Italy in 1922, Cardin not only co-founded futuristic fashion, but was also the first in his field to design fashion for the masses and market his name around the world like no other. Cardin, along with Paco Rabanne and Andre Courreges, was the inventor of futuristic fashion. In the early 1960s, for example, he sent his mannequins down the runway in astronaut suits and helmets. He designed collections well into old age.
