Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu speaks in an interview with the “press” about China’s pressure on his country, why they are preparing for an attack and their expectations about the new US administration.
The Press: For four decades, China’s communist rulers spoke of a “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan under the slogan “one country, two systems.” More recently, Beijing dropped the word “peaceful” and demonstrated in Hong Kong that the “one country, two systems” model no longer has any value. What does this mean for Taiwan?
Joseph Wu: We are looking closely at what the Chinese leadership proclaims. But even more important to us is understanding what you are aiming for and what you are preparing for. It is true that on one occasion in March the word “peaceful” was removed from an official statement, and this has also raised great international concern.
But what matters to us is what the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, has to say about Taiwan. And Xi announced in early January that Taiwan would merge with the mainland under the “one country, two systems” model. If Taiwan refuses, China will not renounce the use of force, yes, it reserves the right to use force to resolve differences with Taiwan.
And what does Taiwan think of the “one country, two systems” model?
