The trade deal between Britain and the EU for the post-Brexit period will be approved on Tuesday with a written decision from the EU Council. On this basis, the agreement can be provisionally applied from January 1, even if the EU Parliament has not yet given its approval. According to the spokesman for the German presidency of the Council of the EU, the deadline for the formal decision ends on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
According to information from diplomatic circles, a videoconference between the EU Heads of State and Government with the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the EU Council, Charles Michel, is scheduled for Tuesday by the night or Wednesday. After a long struggle, both parties agreed to the contract on December 24. There is no longer enough time until the end of the year for a regular ratification process. Therefore, the agreed rules should initially apply provisionally at least until February 28. Britain’s Parliament will vote on the deal on Wednesday, approval is considered secure.
