After Semmering was nearly overrun by visitors after Christmas, there was also a serious accident with two children on Sunday.
Semmering was one of the most prominent talking points in recent days, too many Viennese and Lower Austrian were drawn to sledding and skiing in the nearby ski area after Christmas; in the end, the rope had to be pulled.
Although the toboggan runs were closed on Sunday, the Semmering continued to function properly as the government had declared skiing and tobogganing an exception to the blockade. On Sunday afternoon, a family felt painfully that the streets of Semmering and its surroundings were also very busy.
Accident with a taxi
There was a head-on collision between a car and a taxi on the Semmering replacement road for reasons that are still unknown. The driver of the car and a mother with her two children from the taxi were taken to the hospital in Wiener Neustadt for a more detailed examination by the ambulance service. Only the taxi driver was unhurt.
After police clearance, the two heavily damaged vehicles were rescued by the Semmering and Maria Schutz fire brigades and the accident scene was cleaned up. Heavy traffic was diverted through a parking lot.
