The night is mostly clear and icy. The last remaining clouds in the north are gradually dissolving. The wind is decreasing everywhere, the south wind only cools off in the early hours of the morning at exposed and higher altitudes. Lower temperatures generally minus 10 to minus 3 degrees, in snow-covered valleys down to minus 17 degrees or more are possible.

The cold today in some regions is also demonstrated by the temperature in St. Jakob, in Defereggental: there it was already minus 14 degrees at 4 pm, and the temperature will drop significantly. Tomorrow morning it will be “warmer” in the Lake Constance region and in the city of Vienna at minus 5 degrees.

Heavy snowfall is expected in the south starting Monday

Heavy snowfall is expected again in southern Austria early next week. As reported by the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) on Stefanitag, on Monday and Tuesday in East Tyrol and Carinthia between 20 and 60 centimeters of fresh snow will fall in many regions. However, the precipitation is not as strong as in early December, according to ZAMG.

An area of low pressure over northern Italy brings heavy snowfall. “On Monday it snows heavily in Carinthia and East Tyrol. At low altitudes, it may occasionally rain, especially in Lower Carinthia,” says Michael Tiefgraber of ZAMG. “On Tuesday it is still snowing and raining, but not so hard. Generally, 20 to 60 centimeters of fresh snow is collected Monday through Tuesday in the lowlands of Carinthia and East Tyrol. You can expect up to 60 centimeters, especially in the Lesach Valley and Gail Valley. In the Carnic and Karawanken Alps, it snows about 80 centimeters in some places. “

In some parts of Salzburg, North Tyrol and Styria, you should expect a few inches of fresh snow at the beginning of the week. Also, on Mondays and Tuesdays, strong to stormy southern foehn blows in the mountains, which can also affect lower altitudes. Gusts of more than 100 km / h are expected in places exposed to peaks. On Wednesday the weather will be much calmer throughout Austria.
