Alleged supporters of the Boko Haram terrorist militia attacked the village of Pemi in Borno state in northeastern Nigeria on Christmas Eve and killed at least five people. The attackers set fire to a church of the Evangelical Brethren Church, as reported by the online news service Sahara Reporters. Local officials confirmed the incident, according to the CNN news channel. In addition, seven people were kidnapped.

According to initial information, members of a Christian youth organization gathered in Pemi to celebrate Christmas together. The attack began around 6 pm According to Sahara Reporters, the military took three hours to arrive. In addition to the church, several shops were also burned.

Pemi is only about 20 kilometers from Chibok, where Boko Haram abducted a total of 276 school children in April 2014. About 100 have been held hostage or have died since then. The area is remote and is considered not well protected. The state of Borno is dominated by Muslims. However, Christian minorities live mainly in the south.
