According to Amnesty, armed individuals attacked members of the Amhara, Oromo and Shinasha communities in the region on Wednesday. According to this, there have been repeated attacks against these population groups in the region in recent months. After the attack, around 42 gunmen who were allegedly behind the attack were killed by the armed forces, the government of the Benishangul-Gumuz region announced.

Growing tensions between population groups

In the multi-ethnic state of Ethiopia, with about 112 million inhabitants, there is a lot of tension between population groups. They have risen with Abiy Ahmed, who has been in power since 2018. There is currently a conflict in the northern Tigray region between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which was in power there, and the central government in Addis. Abeba.

Despite mounting ethnic and political tensions, a new parliament will be elected in the country next year. The National Electoral Committee set Friday June 5 as the electoral date. The province of Tigray is exempt from voting. The elections will be rescheduled there as soon as the current interim provincial government can manage the opening of the polling stations. (apa, dpa)
