According to the forecast of the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG), the coming days will bring a varied climate. On Christmas day, you can wait for the onset of winter, in Stefanitag the weather will calm down. At the beginning of next week, Südföhn will bring rainfall in the south and very different temperatures.

The details: On Christmas Day, the next polar cold air fault zone comes in from the northwest, and on the north side of the Alps and in the north it snows again and again. But in the south, too, rain and sleet initially fall before the weather here gradually calms down in the afternoon. Most of the time it remains dry only in the northeast, here only a few showers of rain and snow pass through. The snow line is usually between 300 and 700 meters above sea level. The wind from west to northwest cools in the western half and in the Tauern regions from fast to strong, otherwise it remains quite moderate. Early temperatures are minus two to plus five degrees, daily highs barely higher.

On St. Stephen’s Day, the air pressure begins to slowly rise again and very sunny weather begins, especially in the west and south of Austria. In the north and east, however, the high-altitude stream from the northwest brings some denser cloud fields and individual snow showers on the north side of the Alps. In the north and east, as well as in the Tauern area, moderate to strong winds blow from west to northwest. Early temperatures hover around minus eight to zero degrees, in snow-covered valleys also around minus ten degrees. Daily highs range from minus two to plus four degrees.

On Sunday, fog is expected in the early morning locally, but it is generally not constant. This means that the sun usually shines at first. In the south and west, however, some thicker clouds slowly appear during the day. However, the probability of rain or snow remains low at the moment. In all other places, sunny weather continues into the evening. The east-southwest wind initially blows weak to moderate and is noticeable during the day, especially in the eastern parts of the country and in the mountains. In the morning it is very cold with minus twelve to minus three degrees, the daily maximum temperatures are reached with minus one to plus five degrees.

On Monday, thick clouds gather south of the main alpine ridge throughout the day. With a snow line between 400 and 800 meters above sea level, it also snows and rains a lot and sometimes a lot. North of the main alpine range, on the other hand, from bright to strong, and in the mountainous region also the stormy winds from the south initially create an interplay of sun and dense clouds. At night, local rain also comes from Upper Austria to the east. The snow line here is just under 1,000 meters above sea level. From minus ten to plus five degrees Celsius in the morning, depending on the strong south wind, temperatures rise from minus one to plus ten degrees.

On Tuesday, thick clouds gather over the north side of the Alps from eastern Tyrol with a southern foehn wind. It also rains a lot here, but mostly in the southwest. The snow line is about 800 meters above sea level. Further north and east, however, there is a mixture of sun and thick clouds. During the day, however, there are only a few short showers of rain or snow here from time to time. The line of snowfall from west to east is between 300 and 800 meters above sea level. It is zero to nine degrees in the morning and three to eight degrees during the day.
