A man fleeing the police in the United States caused an accident that left five people dead. The driver himself was among those fatally injured, police said. In the New York suburb of Yonkers, the man had ignored a red light and collided with a vehicle coming from the right at such high speed that it split in two.
The four 18-year-old inmates were thrown from the car and, according to police, died instantly, the victims had barely finished school a few months ago, according to condolences from the city’s public schools. The 36-year-old driver involved in the accident died shortly after in hospital.
Police had started the chase because the man had previously ignored traffic rules, investigators said Wednesday of the accident on Facebook. ABC television station quoted a spokesperson as saying that they did not follow the 36-year-old man too quickly, but rather followed them at some distance. “One person’s irresponsibility prematurely ended four young lives,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “This should be a lesson to everyone who is speeding.”
