Terrorist attack: disputes over the publication of the investigation report

The breakdowns occurred around the November 2 terrorist attack in Vienna. The interior and justice ministries blamed each other. For example, the information that the later assassin Kujtim F. wanted to buy weapons in Slovakia after his release from prison got stuck in nirvana. A specially created commission of inquiry headed by criminal lawyer Ingeborg Zerbes was supposed to rebuild what went wrong. She did that too. The ministries have the report since yesterday. But it is not yet clear if it will be published.

The plan was: report by Christmas

The commission was constituted on November 26. Objective: A first report should be available by Christmas. That worked too. The work of the courts, prosecutors, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the probation service was reviewed. The report gives an idea of the “operational activities and information processing of the concerned departments”, summarizes Zerbes. The processes of the BVT, the LVT and the Army Intelligence Office were also “processed”.

However, what exactly is in the report is still under lock and key. Because there is currently an internal dispute about whether it should be published. “From the Commission’s point of view, nothing stands in the way of a publication,” it says in a Commission press release. He will continue his work after the holidays and then make specific recommendations to the legislature and government.

A planned press conference on the current results of the investigation after the terrorist attack was also canceled.
