Diocesan Bishop of St. Pölten in an interview with P3tv: Preparations are already underway, the priest is checking the facts.
St. Pölten (OTS) – In the big Christmas interview with Professor Hubert Wachter on the Lower Austrian private broadcaster P3tv, Bishop Alois Schwarz delivers a Christmas blast. The parish priest announced that he would initiate a beatification process for former Federal Chancellor Leopold Figl († 1965): “For me, Leopold Figl is a politician – the more I immerse myself in this figure – the more confidence I have: we must and must be here to initiate a process of beatification “.
As reasons for this step, Schwarz cites the conciliatory personality of the Christian social politician, and in the P3tv interview he also points out a martyrdom of Figl, who died in 1965 from the long-term consequences of abuse in the concentration camp: “The man it brought so much hope. … He was never resentful. And he received blows in the concentration camp that really cost him his life ”.
Figl was a politician who built bridges across ideological borders: “At the end of the war, Leopold Figl walked from Schenkenstrasse to Parliament. On the one hand someone hung himself, that was a communist. On the other hand, someone got hooked, That he was a socialist. And the three of them, with Leopold Figl in the middle, went to parliament. In 1945, Austria raised hopes again. Or when I think of his Christmas speech, unforgettable. The man brought so much hope. “
The preparation for the start of the beatification process is already underway, a cleric is collecting all the necessary information: “I have already found a priest whom I have asked to find out more. We have to bring that, and then of course it has to go on its way: to the bishops’ conference, the approval, and of course then to Rome. “
In an interview with P3tv, Bishop Schwarz does not want to compromise himself on how long the beatification process for Leopold Figl could take: “That depends on how quickly Leopold Figl gives us one or another miracle in the beatification process.” There were already people to whom Leopold Figl gave strength in difficult situations: “Recently someone said to me: ‘I told you, Leopold Figl, help me throughout the day and be my partner and defender”. He said later that he had the feeling that it had helped him. “
