By dispensing with fireworks, the relief of medical personnel and the protection of the environment can be guaranteed. The police should be more present on New Years Eve.

The Interior Minister, Karl Nehammer (ÖVP), and the President of the Association of Municipalities, Alfred Riedl, have called for fireworks to be avoided outside the local area on New Year’s Eve. This can relieve medical personnel and protect the environment. Since there is no exception to the hard lock for the turn of the year, Riedl appealed in a broadcast Tuesday to “personal responsibility and the common sense of the people to contain this time with fireworks.”

“The police will be more present at the turn of the year and will also monitor compliance with the provisions of the Pyrotechnics Law,” Nehammer announced. Under this law, the use of fireworks in the local area is prohibited. However, mayors can make exceptions. Outside of built-up areas, more flexible regulations apply.
