Blocking Europe is not the solution

The mistake of thinking, above all, of wanting to stop a viral epidemic at national borders, instead of finally helping together across Europe, needs no explanation.

Special and especially important

The same applies to the EU’s association with Great Britain. Without getting lost in the historical details: Great Britain has played a special, but also particularly important role in Europe for centuries. This will not end Brexit, regardless of how it unfolds. And just as the new corona virus that has now emerged in England will sooner or later be with us, no matter how many airports are closed, all the problems in Britain affect the rest of Europe as well.

Johnson’s fairy tale

It is not necessary to study the economic indicators in detail to know who is the weakest in this battle for Brexit. Britain is dependent on the movement of goods with Europe, and its industry only functions as a closely interconnected part of the European economy – Boris Johnson’s epic fairy tales of “global Britain” cannot hide this.

Rigidity

The stubbornness of the British negotiators is also a sign that you really have your back to the wall. The country is threatened not only with chaos and a further worsening of the economic crisis, but simply with collapse. The Scots want to realize their nationalist dream of independence, Northern Ireland is too closely connected to the south to establish a permanent external EU border in between. All of this has the potential to degenerate into an existential crisis that would ultimately affect Europe. To prevent this from happening, we need close and sensible relations with Great Britain. To ensure that, the strongest can show itself generously in the Brexit dispute, and that is the EU.
