Families without education
No one doubts that the 1.1 million students have suffered an educational loss as a result. It is higher among children from educationally disadvantaged families, where parents can barely support them.
A study on the first blockade in the Netherlands showed that at best students do not forget what they have learned through distance learning, but they hardly learn anything. Although the digital school has been implemented in the Netherlands for a long time, not only through a blitzkrieg campaign in March as in Austria.
On the other hand, there are increasing complaints that educators are passing on the pressure to teach as many subjects as possible in a confinement to students without filters. This pressure is particularly problematic for the upper grades, even if they were repeatedly brought to places for attendance phases, for example, for technical practical exercises or to prepare for school work.
In Austria there are still no studies that can give an overview of how big the loss of education was in the year Corona 2020 and how dramatic the effects of missing educational modules will be in the coming years.
Countermeasures

On-site tutoring:
The school autonomously regulates that students with learning disabilities are brought to school for remedial lessons. Educators can decide for themselves.
Repeat school year:
Considerations of all students repeating the school year due to deficits were quickly rejected. There is not only a lack of will for this, but also the teachers and the space in schools that would be necessary for this.
Sacrificial holidays:
Even the most obvious option of simply canceling a few days of the semester, Easter or summer holidays and continuing classes, is currently being ruled out by the Ministry of Education and the union. “We want to stick to these formal structures. There are already many comings and goings with the closures, ”Minister Heinz Faßmann said. Rather than shorten the summer vacation, the minister prefers to focus on vacation courses.
Vacation courses:
In any case, what is coming are remedial courses and tutoring during the holidays. During the Christmas holidays, for example, via the website weiterlernen.at with the help of coaches (Registration from December 28). During the semester break, there are additional classes in the schools. Teachers who volunteer are compensated for this work. Future teachers will also be reinstated.
It is also certain that in the summer there will be “Summer School” again. In the last two weeks of August before the new school year, math and German should be repeated. The Ministry of Education wants to double the places in the summer of 2021 and expects 50,000 students to participate.
