Out win! WAC surprises Red Bull Salzburg at year’s end

Series champions Red Bull Salzburg said goodbye to the Bundesliga winter break with a 2: 3 (0: 0) loss to WAC. The Carinthians celebrated their first victory in Salzburg on Matchday 12 thanks to a brace from Jonathan Scherzer (51st) and Dejan Joveljic (52nd) and a goal from Eliel Peretz (79th) and improved to sixth place in the table. The master, however, threatened to be pushed from above by LASK that night.

In Dominik Szoboszlai’s farewell match, who said goodbye to Leipzig in winter, Salzburg caught up with Mergim Berisha (64th) and Patson Daka (69th) at 0-2, but it was no less important for a dull first half with Punished third loss of the season.

The hit at Wals-Siezenheim offered a pleasant, if somewhat sleepy, duel at eye level in the first half. The “bulls” registered a slight superiority in general, but without finding the great opportunity. The best was Patson Daka, who scored once in the penalty area next to the (14th) and at the end of the first 45 minutes over the door (38th).

The WAC, which allowed relatively little in the rear, had a good opportunity: After a long and high pass from goalkeeper Alexander Kofler to Dario Vizinger, whose quick conclusion was prey to Cican Stankovic (18th). Matthäus Taferner also almost finished off a fine solo with a goal, but Stankovic was back on the post (32nd).

After the break, Salzburg seemed to ignite the turbo that was previously missing, with Berisha (46th) and Rasmus Kristensen (48th) missing the opposing goal early on. But the somewhat anemic performance of the locals in the first half should take revenge, and twice in just 68 seconds. After a good combination, Joveljic served Scherzer, who made it 1-0 with his first Bundesliga goal. And almost in the next action on a fumble, the assistant rose to 2-0 after Vizinger showed up.

As a result, Salzburg pressed for the first goal, which also fell after almost an hour: Kofler couldn’t clear a cross from Kristensen well enough, Berisha dusted off. A little later, Szoboszlai started the counterattack with a summary, Daka made it 2-2.

Salzburg seemed to be on the trigger – shortly after Daka hit pole with a shot in the far corner (74) – and yet caught the third goal: Peretz, who had already checked Stankovic shortly before (76th), scored after a perfect match. Michael Liendl took him to the far corner and made the “Lobos” hit perfect. Also because Kofler showed a good save against Berisha at the end (90th).
