Borussia Mönchengladbach imposed an internal club sanction of one month’s salary for social purposes on their French striker Marcus Thuram after the spitting attack on ÖFB legionnaire Stefan Posch in the 1: 2 (1: 0) against Hoffenheim on Saturday .
“We have known Marcus for almost two years, we know his surroundings, we know his parents’ home and none of this fits with what happened yesterday,” sporting director Max Eberl said in a club announcement Sunday.
Thuram, 23, was devastated. “I apologize to everyone, Stefan Posch, my opponents, my teammates, my family and everyone who saw my reaction,” the forward wrote on Instagram.
Thuram spat in Posch’s face on Saturday and saw the red card when the score was 1: 1. Manager Marco Rose had already apologized “on behalf of the club” after the game. Rose and some of Thuram’s teammates also mentioned sending off as the reason for the first loss at home this season.
