The 1-0 victory in Südstadt was already Rapid’s ninth consecutive victory against Admira. Those from Lower Austria hibernate at the bottom of the list.
Rapid could look forward to a successful end of the year. Hütteldorfer celebrated an indisputable 1-0 win at the start of Matchday 12 of the Bundesliga and improved from fourth to third place in the table for at least one matchday. After the last outing of the European Cup and the ÖFB Cup, as well as the 3-0 loss in the league against WSG Tirol, coach Dietmar Kühbauer’s squad was able to make positive news again before the Christmas holidays.
After the recent low blows, the guests showed a strong reaction from the start and Ercan Kara started the victory away in the 20th minute. It was the sixth goal of the season for the Rapids top forward, and for the third time he was successful with head. This extended the winning streak against the Südstadt team to nine games in a row. The last time Rapidler won against an en suite team was between March 2014 and December 2015 against Ried.
Kühbauer made two changes compared to the 2: 6 debacle in the Cup round of 16 in Salzburg, the new defensive midfield being Dejan Petrovic and Lion Schuster. Srdjan Grahovac had to pass due to an ankle injury, defender Leo Greiml was initially on the bench. With Stephan Auer, Erwin Hoffer and Dominik Starkl, three former Rapidlers were in the Lower Austrian starting lineup.
They experienced first-hand how the Rapidler took control of the reins at the BSFZ Arena from the start, but was initially unlucky at the end. Thorsten Schick slammed the ball against the crossbar with his left hand after a nice single action (9th), Kara missed with a strange instep after a shoemaker passed the crossbar (16th). With his second chance there was no lack of coldness. The 24-year-old striker was able to undo after Fountas crossed from the best position. The Admirans didn’t even get a chance before the break and they were hard to beat in terms of harmlessness.
After the restart, the locals became a bit more active, but the Viennese remained more dangerous. Admira goalkeeper Andreas Leitner saved his team from a major deficit with a double chance for Kara and Fountas (62nd) with parades. A conclusion by Marcel Ritzmaier clearly missed the goal (66th). It was only in the 80th minute that Marco Hausjell gave Admira his first significant chance, but the offensive player fired from a good position (80). Kara was no longer there, he had to be replaced after Emanuel Aiwu hit him hard on the foot.
Rapid returned to winning ways in Bundesliga match 150 with Admira after three competitive matches without a win and two losses in a row. Südstädter spent the winter after seven defeats in the last eight rounds as the bottom of the table.
