Sergio Pérez will remain in Formula 1 after all, in 2021 even in an absolute team: the Mexican will drive for Red Bull next season. The racing team announced this decision on Friday. Pérez will take over the cockpit from Alex Albon of Thailand, who has been demoted to reserve pilot.

“I have been waiting for the opportunity to compete for a team that is capable of the World Cup since I entered Formula 1,” said Pérez. The best Red Bull driver remains Dutchman Max Verstappen, who won the season finale in Abu Dhabi last Sunday and was third in the championship standings behind the duo of Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. Behind Mercedes, Red Bull finished second in the constructors’ championship.

Sergio Pérez had lost his place at Racing Point to Sebastian Vettel, who is looking forward to his new role with Aston Martin’s successor team after leaving Ferrari. Perez, 30, has a good reputation on the Formula 1 scene, in the penultimate race of the season he celebrated his first victory in Bahrain in his 190th round of the World Championship.

Mercedes motorsports director Toto Wolff also appreciates the Mexican’s qualities. “With Sergio Pérez you are winning someone with a lot of experience, someone who has a lot of speed. He showed that with a long-awaited victory,” said the Austrian, who himself extended his contract with the world team for three years. In his opinion, Red Bull “will be strengthened by this access and will make it an even stronger rival in the Constructors’ Championship.”

With Pérez’s contract with Red Bull, Nico Hülkenberg’s last chance to return to the premier class has also been destroyed. After his convincing performance as a substitute driver, Emmerich hoped to have a permanent cockpit over two race weekends for Pérez, who was suffering from Corona.
