What a success for the women’s soccer team at SKN St. Pölten! For the first time in the club’s history, the women of SKN are in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The Lower Austrians won the return leg of the 16th away final against FC Zurich on Thursday with a goal from Lisa Makas (83rd) 1-0 (0-0). The opponent in the round of 16 will not be determined until February 16, 2021.
The guests keep Zurich under control for long stretches and are rarely in serious danger – for example, in the 64th minute, when Julia Stierli’s free kick lands on pole. But the SKN were unlucky in the 69th minute, as the referee missed a clear penalty penalty on Melanie Brunnthaler.
The decision was made by St. Pölten in the 83rd minute: after a Jasmin Eder corner kick, Makas, who had been substituted ten minutes earlier, hit home with a header. “The goal was a relief, until then it was a total fight,” explained Makas in an interview with ORF.
His coach Maria Wolf was also relieved. “We knew we had to survive the first half hour because Zurich would step on the gas. It was a work victory. The first half was not so ideal, the second much better,” said the 39-year-old, who has no opponent. “We are in the round of 16, now anyone can come.”
St. Pölten is only the second Austrian club to participate in the knockout stages of the Champions League. Neulengbach, a former Austrian star, was represented five times in the second round of the ‘premier class’, once in March 2014, including in the quarter-finals.
