The supervisory board of ÖBB-Holding AG has unanimously reappointed the Chairman of the Board, Andreas Matthä. The 58-year-old Carinthian’s second term at the helm of the Federal Railroad begins on July 1, 2021 and can last five years.
After three and a half years, both parties have the right to rescind. Matthä has been with ÖBB for almost 40 years; has been managing the entire state-owned group as CEO of the holding company since June 2016.
In a broadcast, the chairman of the supervisory board, Andrea Reithmayer, praised Matthä’s work in his first term as chairman of the board. It has shown that it “keeps the company on track even in tough times.” At the same time, it has strengthened ÖBB’s position as a sustainable company with a complete focus on the customer.
“Sign for continuity”
Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) also welcomes the re-election. “In difficult times we need stability and commitment. I am convinced that Andreas Matthä will bring it with him, “says Gewessler, referring to the next steps in the fight against the climate crisis: the state railway will have a major expansion program, with the level of the climate ticket 1 throughout Austria. 2-3 in the next year and with a full network of night trains across Europe.
The old and new CEO of ÖBB sees the decision as a “strong sign of continuity” for the company. “We guided ÖBB through the crisis with a firm hand and kept the country going. Austria can be proud of the railway, ”says Matthä. Now everything must be done to manage the economic effects of the crown crisis. The ÖBB will expand the offer nationally and internationally. For Matthä, the Federal Railroad is “the largest climate protection company in the country.”
