As the situation in intensive care units remains tense despite the stabilized number of new infections and a large part of the population has not recognized the seriousness of the situation, Austria will slide into a third wave after Christmas.

A sharp increase in new infections and hospital patients with the consequence of a third hard block in January and / or February is the most likely scenario in view of current developments, says Walter Hasibeder, medical director of Anesthesia and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the St. Vinzenz Hospital in Zams, Tirol. in conversation with the “press”. If it really is about this, you are “in your own hands” by keeping a constant distance and wearing a mask, but recent months have shown that younger people in particular take the situation and dangers of Covid-19 seriously. they are not yet known.

“It starts with adolescents at puberty and goes up to 35 and 40 who do not sufficiently reduce their social contacts with people from other households,” Hasibeder says. “They think they can’t get seriously ill anyway, which is a mistake. Just one example to make it clear: out of ten patients we had to intubate (invasively ventilate, note) in the intensive care unit, seven died. And they weren’t just very old people ”. At 62, he does not belong to the classic risk group, “but after everything I have seen in recent months in terms of complications and severe courses, I really do not want this disease.”
