Fiaker horses will be free of heat from 30 degrees – in Salzburg

Salzburg’s city council unanimously decided at its meeting on Wednesday that Fiaker horses will be freed from the heat starting at 30 degrees Celsius starting in the summer of 2021. The city of Salzburg is implementing a long-standing demand from activists for animal rights and green citizens list.

So far, a 35 degree limit has been applied. In the future, the temperature will no longer be measured in Salzburg-Freisaal, but directly at the location of the wagons – the Residenzplatz in the city center.

Abolition rejected

However, a request from the citizens’ list to abolish horse-drawn carriages in the city after current permits for the stands have expired in 2023, found no majority. The city council also decided yesterday to support the five Fiaker companies in Salzburg with their 67 horses currently used for trips in case of breakdowns in the second running of the bulls with Covid-19 aid for an amount of 105 euros per horse.

The association against animal factories (VGT) expressed its satisfaction with the new regulation. “Now the city of Vienna is called to do the same,” said Georg Prinz of the VGT. The outdated 35 degree regulation still applies here, meaning the federal capital stands alone in an international comparison. The aim is to improve Vienna’s Fiaker horses, but in the long term, in Salzburg as in Vienna, a concept must be put forward to completely abandon horse-drawn carriages and promote animal-friendly electronic carriages.
