ÖFB Cup: Salzburg disarms Rapid

Dominik Szoboszlai scored the first goal in the 16th minute, Mergim Berisha (19) and Sekou Koita (23) ensured with a quick combination following that Rapid was already on the ropes. The other goals went to the account of Patson Daka (74th), Mohamed Camara (83rd / from penalty) and Rasmus Kristensen (88th).

Coach Dietmar Kühbauer’s squad achieved aesthetic results thanks to a penalty taken by Taxiarchis Fountas and converted (45º + 1) and Maximilian Ullmann (78º). In the quarterfinals at the beginning of February, the “Bulls” will once again face a club from the capital with the Austrian record.

Ullmann hits from afar

Ullmann at least made sure that the best goal of the day went to Rapid.

“We wanted to get ahead”

“We started the game well, although we needed a little bit. Then we let the ball circulate well and took our chances. We only need to have the last ten minutes written down before the break. We wanted to advance, and we succeeded, ”said veteran Zlatko Junuzovic, who was denied another goal for the hosts in the first half, in an interview with the ORF.

Salzburg, which won seven of the nine most recent trophy titles, is at least in the ÖFB Cup quarter-finals for the 10th time in a row. For Rapid, the dream of the first cup title since 1995 ended prematurely. Last season Hütteldorfer also failed against Salzburg; at the time, however, only narrowly with a 1: 2 loss in overtime. For the guests it was the third buffer within days of leaving the Europa League and 0: 3 at home in the league against WSG Tirol.

Three goals in eight minutes

The Hütteldorfer were left with captain Maximilian Hofmann, back in shape, in the center of the defense in Wals-Siezenheim after a half-balanced first quarter of an hour on a losing post. Szoboszlai completed an action started in his own defense, which he had started himself with several passes, after Berisha’s preliminary work with a balloon on Rapid goalkeeper Paul Gartler. The home team’s first big chance at the game led to success and put him in a good mood.

Goal number two was started by a Szoboszlai free kick cross. Koita, who had lost sight of fast defense, hit the ball in front of Gartler who couldn’t get out of goal, and Berisha only had to push his cross pass over the line. Another four minutes later, the triple hit was perfect. With Berisha and Koita, two “cops” fooled more than twice as many Rapidlers, and Koita virtually fired at the empty goal. A controversial offside by Zlatko Junuzovic (25th) was not recognized.

After all, the Viennese did not give up and developed a goal danger shortly before the halftime whistle. One of Ercan Kara’s shots failed (43rd). Three minutes later, Rapid’s top scorer would have liked to score from a penalty, but after intense discussions, Fountas grabbed the ball and confidently sank it into goal. The Greek himself had been shot down by Kristensen.

Defeat turns into debacle

After the restart, the Viennese were unable to turn the game around, Salzburg continued to dominate, but initially had no luck at the end with a free kick from the bar by Szoboszlai (50th) and a long shot from Camara rejected by Gartler (61st). After that, it got really sour for the guests – Daka surprised Gartler in the short corner. After a wonderful long-distance goal by Ullmann from around 30 meters, the Salzburg side put the finishing touches back on.

After an attack on Noah Okafor, Hofmann correctly saw the traffic light card (83) just outside the penalty area, and Camara used the disputed penalty. Fullback Kristensen made the final point with a high shot into the near corner. Salzburg have only lost one Cup match since 2013: the 2018 final against Puntigamer Sturm Graz. The final is scheduled for May 1, 2021 in Klagenfurt.

“In the first half, seven minutes was enough for them, we behaved so badly and we fell 3-0 down. Then we came back and we could have done it 2: 3. In the second half it was a better game for us, “said a disappointed Rapid Kühbauer coach at ORF,” but at the moment we cannot play perfectly and again we have received cheap goals. So Salzburg is the deserved winner, they are to be congratulated. “
