WAC and LASK lived up to their role as favorites on Wednesday and entered the ÖFB Cup quarter-finals without conceding a goal. Carinthians beat second division SKU Amstetten at the Lavanttal Arena in a low-chance match with goals from Dominik Baumgartner (8th) and captain Michael Liendl (93rd) with 2-0. Linz defeated Viennese city division ASK Elektra 3-0 thanks to a hat trick by Johannes Eggestein (2nd, 15th, 34th).
This means that five Bundesliga clubs are represented in the quarterfinals, the last ticket being played in the coup of the night between the defending champions Red Bull Salzburg and Rapid. Before that, Wiener Austria and Sturm Graz had progressed. The matches of the round of 16 will be played between February 5 and 7, 2021, the draw was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon (today).
Despite the upcoming league coup in Salzburg on Sunday, WAC coach Ferdinand Feldhofer refrained from a strong rotation, Liendl took his team onto the field as usual and was also able to cheer quickly. After Sprangler’s flank, Baumgartner headed out. Otherwise, the hosts were content to handle the lead, with another great opportunity as Christopher Wernitznig (38th) just hit the outside net.
Since the Carinthians didn’t really bother after the break, it was always exciting. The Lower Austria team leveled in the 74th minute, but were too shy at the end, as WAC goalkeeper Alexander Kofler was on the lookout against David Peham (88) and Philipp Offenthaler’s shot (92) missed. In return, Liendl made everything clear. So the Carinthians survived the last sixteen after three failed attempts.
For the first time in current competition, the Feldhofer troop brought the regular season. In the first round, Regionalliga-Ost-Club Neusiedl am See were defeated 5-2 after a 2-2 win in extra time. The success in the second round over the league competitor SV Ried was, after a 2: 2 after 120 minutes, only solved after the penalty shoot-out (4: 3).
Linz’s success was never in jeopardy. Eggestein scored at 1:24 minutes after Madsen-Lochpass. After a quarter of an hour, the German was successful after a pass from Reiter. On his third goal (34th), the 22-year-old loan from Bremen fooled an Elektra opponent with his heel and hit the Kreuzeck. A significantly larger victory would have been possible, Peter Michorl (23rd), Rene Renner (50th), Dominik Reiter (58th) and Eggestein (63rd) all failed in the aluminum casing.
