After the “Letter of Intent” in 2019, shortly before the turn of the year in 2021, an important step will follow in concrete terms for regional light rail. The local council unanimously approved the “framework agreement” between the municipal, state and federal governments on Wednesday.
Large regional light rail project
“This means that the long-awaited extension of the regional light rail on our part is finally underway,” said Salzburg Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP) happily. “The city has done its homework.” The aim of the big project is a clearly noticeable shift towards public transport and thus more climate-friendly mobility in the city of Salzburg and the central area.
The federal government should pay 50 percent of the costs
The last and decisive negotiation will take place next week between the municipal, state and federal governments. In principle, Salzburg assumes that “the federal government will cover at least 50 percent of the costs,” Preuner said. That was also recorded in the decision of the municipal council.
2023 Start of construction of the Mirabellplatz station
Preuner: “Something is happening. The planning of the presentation is planned for 2021. The first section from the main train station to Mirabellplatz can be built from 2023 ”. Furthermore, plans for the continuation to Salzburg Süd, to connect the fair railway and routes outside the city limits, would be continued or intensified.
20 million euros in planning
The planning effort is estimated at around € 20 million by 2023. For the financing of the construction to Mirabellplatz (2014 estimated cost: € 150 million), a city-to-country cost key of half minus the federal contribution. The costs are specified with the shipment planning. The federal government has announced that it will bear at least 50 percent of these costs. For the continuation of the route from Mirabellplatz, the costs must first be negotiated between the city, the state, the federal government and the municipalities.
