Discount store Lidl is the first large supermarket chain in Austria to advocate for the introduction of a one-way warehouse for PET bottles.
Opponents of the plastic deposit, such as the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKÖ), argue that it would be cheaper and more suitable for everyday use to expand the existing collection infrastructure.
Lidl: “Closing the loop”
Lidl pledged in a broadcast on Wednesday to the goals of the EU circular economy package. “With one-way tanks, the cycles can be closed, the quality of the high-quality raw material can be maintained and waste can be minimized,” says Alessandro Wolf, Head of Lidl Austria. “In order to achieve the common goals of the circular economy package in Austria, the entire collection and recycling system needs to be optimized, standardized and further simplified.”
Gewessler appreciates commitment to plastic tank
Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) welcomed Lidl’s commitment to the plastic tank. “In recent months we have progressed step by step in good discussions with the retailers and I am sure that the support will be even greater here as well,” Gewessler said in a statement to the APA. Gewessler had announced a one-way tank model in the fall through the end of the year. In the long term, the reuse rate for beverage containers should increase to 55 percent by 2030. Environmental protection organizations Global 2000 and Greenpeace were also pleased with Lidl’s announcement.
