Health Minister Anschober happily accepts that a decision on the approval of the vaccine in the EU will be made before Christmas.
“In the spring we dreamed of a vaccine against Covid, in September I announced that I assumed we would have a first vaccine in January, and everyone shook their heads,” recalls the Minister of Health, Rudolf Anschober (Greens).
“It is now clear that a vaccine can be approved for the first time in the EU before Christmas. It is great news for our fight against the worst pandemic in a hundred years and it gives us all hope,” said the department head.
First phase of vaccination
He assumes that in the next stage after approval by the EU Commission, an initial delivery from the producer will be delivered to all member states at the same time. “Immediately after receiving this delivery and after the delivery of the other 230,000 doses, we will provide these vaccination doses in accordance with the Austrian vaccination strategy in nursing homes and elderly for vaccination,” says Anschober, outlining the next steps.
Is a new blockade approaching?
Meanwhile, just before Christmas, the debate about another lockdown is fueling. “We have to close everything now and go into lockdown,” Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) said today in an interview with “Heute”. The federal party, especially incumbent Pamela Rendi-Wagner, had asked Austria to “hibernate” in recent days. The government, however, is still hesitating and wants to continue monitoring the figures, but a decision could be made tomorrow Wednesday.
