According to media reports, former US presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg will become Minister of Transportation to future President Joe Biden. News channel CNN and the Washington Post reported Tuesday that Biden had chosen the 38-year-old man who caused a sensation in the Democratic primary campaign.
The eloquent former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, had gone from outsider to serious contender for the Democratic presidential race. The openly homosexual politician and representative of the political center came first and second in the first two primaries in February. As a result, he regressed more and more.
Buttigieg finally exited the presidential race in March, which increasingly turned into a duel between Biden and left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders. Then he stood behind Biden. He also supported him in the election campaign against President Donald Trump. The Afghanistan veteran is considered one of the Democratic Party’s great hopes for young talent. Buttigieg was considered almost certain to belong to the government, but it was not clear what position he would hold.
The Victory Institute, which upholds the concerns of LGBTQ politicians, said Buttigieg would become the first openly gay politician with a permanent cabinet seat if approved by the Senate. That is a “milestone”. Under Trump, the openly gay former U.S. ambassador to Berlin Richard Grenell was already temporarily occupying a cabinet rank in his role as director of executive secretary services. However, this was only for a few months and without confirmation from the Senate.
Biden had promised to create a government team that reflects the diversity of the American population.
He has nominated several ministers since defeating Trump in the November 3 presidential election. His former foreign policy adviser, Antony Blinken, is said to be Foreign Minister, former Federal Reserve Chief Janet Yellen as the first woman in US history to become Secretary of the Treasury, and the retired four-star general. Lloyd Austin as the first African American Secretary of Defense. Read here which candidates Biden has put forward for the future US administration.
