The Viennese took the lead at the Lavanttal-Arena thanks to Alon Turgeman in the first minute. The Wolfsbergers then quickly tied through Dejan Joveljic (17th) and in turn introduced them through Eliel Peretz (69th) in the second half of the game.
Two minutes later, Austria scored their second goal with a penalty converted by Christoph Monschein (71st). In the end, both teams missed opportunities before Liendl still succeeded in the last action of the game. Patrick Pentz was in the right corner, but the ball still found its way into the goal.
The beginning of the dream of violets brought nothing
The WAC initially showed no signs of fatigue. With the exception of Luka Lochoshvili (suspended), represented by Stefan Peric, coach Ferdinand Feldhofer relied on the same team that started in the Europa League victory against Feyenoord Rotterdam, Peter Stöger relied on captain Alexander Grünwald for Austria and, for the first time this season, at Monschein and Turgeman in the storm.
The Israeli, who started this season for the first time after a long injury, should make himself felt quickly. 52 seconds had passed when the attacker headed a cross from Suttner into the WAC goal. Austria could have provided the leading security, but the WAC dominated. In the eyes of club manager Dietmar Riegler, who shaved as promised after the heroic feat of the Europa League, the home side pressed for compensation, which should come.
Austria was unable to break free, a cross by Michael Novak found Joveljic, who also hit his head. Austria’s defense was in disarray. Minutes later, Joveljic had it 2-1 on his foot after he unexpectedly received the ball from a corner kick. But the Serbian acted hastily, Pentz cleared (23rd).
But the Viennese put the lines back on their game. Benedikt Pichler had the new leadership under his belt. The offensive strongman did everything well at first, but only against Alexander Kofler did he close too centrally to the WAC goalkeeper (27th). He then blocked another attempt from Pichler.
Best ending for the WAC
Feldhofer brought in Nemanja Rnic for Stefan Peric, who had already been warned with yellow, and saw Liendl’s shot slightly off target, which Pentz rejected (56th). A tired turgeman left the field in just over an hour. Even before that, Austria struggled to resume their offensive play.
It got turbulent after the 70th minute. WAC initially scored their second goal: Austrian defender Erik Palmer-Brown again failed to get the ball out of the danger zone, Liendl’s pass to Peretz was easily taken advantage of by the Israeli who had been replaced a few minutes before. On the other side, Grünwald fell into the penalty area after Joveljic touched his foot. Referee Rene Eisner decided a penalty, Monschein sent Kofler to the wrong corner.
Austria’s top scorer could have added more, but he shot past Kofler and past goal (80th) after Patrick Wimmer’s groundwork. In what was now a turbulent game, Mario Leitgeb nearly shot the top of the bar in return. The decision was made in injury time: Maximilian Sax hit Christopher Wernitznig on the hip, Liendl scored from the point.
