Anthony Joshua remains a four-time heavyweight champion of the world. The 31-year-old Briton won on Saturday night (local time) in London against Bulgarian Kubrat Pulew by knockout in the ninth round and successfully defended his WBO, IBF, WBA and IBO belts. In front of 1,000 spectators at Wembley Arena, the 39-year-old Pulew missed his second World Cup chance after losing his match with Wladimir Klitschko in 2014.
This clears the way for Joshua’s side for a union fight with WBC world champion Tyson Fury. It remains to be seen if the fight between the two Englishmen will actually take place in the next year. More recently, the Joshua party had accused Fury time and again of avoiding the duel.
Joshua started cautiously against Pulew, then showed his entire repertoire in the third round. Pulew went down twice and came close to knockout, but Pulew rebounded and even won the sixth round. On the ninth lap, Joshua passed first with his right hook, then finished the fight with a tough fastball.
