Innsbruck (OTS) – The call for the prevention of abuse after the VfGH ruling on euthanasia is strong and justified. Now it’s about dignified end-of-life care and protection.
The Austrian Constitutional Court has also ruled: the crime of “helping people commit suicide” violates the right to self-determination and will be repealed on January 1, 2022. The extent to which assisted suicide will be allowed in the future is open. “Human death” is a fundamental right in the sense of the European Court of Human Rights. This decision is of immense importance to our society. Sooner or later, affected by it or confronted by relatives, death is a concern for every individual. The happiness of being able to fall asleep in peace at the age of 100 in a peaceful, decrepit and painless way is rare. That works only for a few. This has not only been true since Covid-19. Discussing the VfGH verdict in a controversial way now doesn’t help much.
It is more important to keep a close eye on the deadline, until December 31, 2021, and the associated legal protection regulations. It is in everyone’s interest to prevent the abuse of euthanasia. It should not be that the elderly or infirm are pressured into questioning their right to exist just because they receive so little help. Expanding the best possible hospice and palliative care should be a solution. This must be comprehensive and affordable. There are too long wait times, too many holes, mobile and stationary. For those affected and their families, dignity at the end of life always has to do with concrete and tangible support, there are serious deficits. This has to do with the fact that we are suppressing the accompaniment of the sick and dying. VfGH’s ruling should be open for discussion.
