One sentence, collective relief: now there is a lasting calm, said ZAMG meteorologist Stefan Kiesenhofer yesterday morning, expressing what many people in Cornwall and East Tyrol have been wanting for days. The weather situation is finally beginning to relax after record rains. But the great sigh of relief is followed by a great cleanup: 1,300 homes in Krnten were without electricity last night, there were 1,500 in East Tyrol. Numerous streets were still unable to clear after a closure.
More than 180 installers worked in Krnten yesterday to remedy weather-related failures in the power grid. As Kleine Zeitung reports, employees of the state highway administration have been on duty for more than 19,500 hours since the onset of the snow to make roads and bridges passable again. 3,900 tons of road salt were used. However, several localities and the entire Lesach Valley are still cut off from the outside world.
The trees fell on the houses
The danger of avalanches in the affected areas also remains high, experts from the avalanche warning service announced Thursday the third level, that is, a considerable danger, for large parts of East Tyrol. Only in the extreme south of East Tyrol was there still any level four danger (high danger). Several schools remain closed and massive corona tests in eight communities had to be postponed indefinitely.
The snow load is overwhelming: yesterday, numerous fire brigades were on duty throughout Krnten due to falling trees. In St. Johann im Lavanttal, an alder about 15 meters high collapsed under the load of snow and fell on a family home. The facade, a window and the garden fence were damaged. The 55-year-old owner was not injured and began the cleanup himself.
Heavy snow also chilled Styria on Thursday night: yesterday morning around 11,000 households were without power, by lunchtime there were still 6,000, most of them in the Leibnitz district and western Styria. Assemblers sometimes had to cut paths to cut lines with chainsaws. In Kapfenberg (Bruck-Marzuschlag district) a house was hit by several falling conifers. Fortunately, no one was injured there either.
