Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton returns to his Mercedes after testing positive for coronavirus at the season finale next weekend in Abu Dhabi. As announced on Thursday by the racing team and the world motorsports association FIA, the Brit will receive approval for the Grand Prix on Sunday (2.10pm, live on ORF1) after several negative CoV tests.
Hamilton had tested positive twice a week and a half ago and then had to go into quarantine in Bahrain. The 35-year-old therefore missed the penultimate race of the World Championship last Sunday at Sachir, where Williams’ regular driver George Russell replaced him.
The quarantine ended and Hamilton traveled to Abu Dhabi on Thursday. Upon arrival they gave him negative, fulfilling the last condition to access the paddock. There he can already participate in practice on Friday, Russell will drive again for Williams at the weekend.
“One of the hardest weeks”
Hamilton said in a video of his infection Tuesday: “It was definitely one of the hardest weeks I’ve had in some time.” At the same time, he announced that he would start at the last Grand Prix of the year if allowed.
Hamilton has been crowned world champion for the seventh time since the Turkish Grand Prix in mid-November. However, its sporting future is unclear. Hamilton’s contract ends at the end of the year, and the Silver Arrows is very likely to expand.
