Tax investigation against Joe Biden’s son, Hunter

reThe Delaware State Attorney’s Office launched an investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President-elect Joe Biden. It is about his “tax matters,” Hunter Biden said in a statement circulated by his father’s office Wednesday. He did not give details, but assured him that he had not been guilty of anything.

The name Hunter Biden had become known internationally on the Ukrainian affair. He used to be on the board of directors of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. Outgoing President Donald Trump accused Joe Biden in the election campaign of stopping corruption investigations against Burisma and his son through his influence as then-Vice President of the United States. It did not provide any evidence to back up these allegations.

“I take this matter very seriously”

Hunter Biden said he learned of the federal investigation against him, led by the Delaware prosecutor, on Tuesday. “I take this matter very seriously and I am confident that a professional and objective review … will demonstrate that I have conducted my business in a legal and proper manner, including with the help of professional tax advisers,” the statement read .

The team preparing for Joe Biden’s transition to the presidency said the president-elect was very proud of his son, who had endured tough challenges, “including the fierce personal attacks in recent months.” He had come out stronger from that, the statement said.

The federal investigation comes at a difficult time for Joe Biden. His future justice minister could be responsible for the investigation if it is still ongoing after he took office on January 20.

The CNN broadcaster reported that the investigation had already begun in 2018. Federal authorities had suspended them in the months leading up to the elections to comply with regulations that voting should not be influenced. Now the investigation would resume, in which the FBI of the Federal Police and the IRS tax authority are involved. Among other things, it is investigating whether Hunter Biden and his partners have violated tax and money laundering laws in their overseas businesses, especially in China. The investigation is not about future President Joe Biden.

Trump camp used emails to attack Joe Biden

Before the election, the “New York Post” published emails that, in the opinion of the Trump camp, should show that Hunter Biden wanted to cash in on his father’s office as vice president under Trump’s predecessor, Barack Obama. Trump’s group also evaluated the emails as evidence that Joe Biden, contrary to his testimony, knew about his son’s foreign affairs. Joe Biden strongly denied the allegations. He never commented on the details of his son’s business.

How the emails were made public was questionable. They are said to have been found on a laptop in a repair shop. The “New York Post” claims to have received a hard drive copy from Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s longtime personal attorney and confidante. The copy was made by the owner of the repair shop before the FBI seized the laptop in December 2019, the newspaper reported at the time.
